Cultivate: Writing

Musing…
"Writing, to me, is simply thinking through my fingers."
 - Isaac Asimov

"Writing saved me from the sin and inconvenience of violence."
 - Alice Walker

Charise’s Turn:
Writing in a reflective way has come to the forefront recently like a message delivered right into my hands. A colleague shares how she has started making a list of what she can change and what she can not change, and adds to this daily. I grabbed on to this idea and made some discoveries in my own list, which has helped develop a realistic picture of where I am in my life.

Coincidently, in looking through an archive of interviews I’ve given as co-author of A Portable Identity I stumbled upon my answer to the question, what would I do differently if I moved overseas again?: “…begin journaling about my feelings and thoughts regarding the move as soon as I knew that it was going to happen. I wouldn’t wait until I got to the new country. I would try to pay attention to my inner world and begin to articulate what was happening to me, so that I could stay in touch with myself throughout all the change. I think this would help keep me grounded, and I’d be less likely to ignore my needs.”

Research has shown that when you write down your goals they are much more likely to happen. Just think of the action of writing – what is floating around in your thoughts takes form as words on paper so you are already taking the first step into the physical realm of manifestation. You are grounding your ideas. As nature dictates, in order for something to flourish it must take root first. Right? Write!

Get Fired Up:
Get a pad of paper or notebook or journal, whichever appeals to you, and have a conversation with yourself on paper. You can start with asking yourself this: “how can I make writing a powerful tool for what I want to accomplish? “
Writing for your benefit is another way to embrace all of your self.

Cultivate: Joy

Watercolor by Kate Kroska
Musing...
"As an irrigator guides water to his fields, as an archer aims an arrow, as a carpenter carves wood, the wise shape their lives.“  ~ Buddha

"Begin making choices based on what makes you feel freer and happier, rather than how you think an ideal life should look. It’s the process of feeling our way toward happiness, not the realizing of some Platonic ideal, that creates our best lives."  ~ Martha Beck, O Magazine, January 2009

Kate’s Turn:
When I cultivate a garden, I’m creating the conditions in which the plant can thrive. I see how a flower opens to the light, takes in the water, and draws its nutrients from the soil. When it bends to follow the light, it is feeling its way to flourish. When this hummingbird eats the transformed light, it, too, is feeling its way to thrive. When I cultivate a practice such as qigong or slow cooking or watercolor, I deliberately choose actions/thoughts/feelings that enhance my well-being.  And it’s the pleasure, the joy that pulls me forward, much like this hummingbird – what an easy inner compass to follow!

So, for example, when I’m cultivating the virtue of generosity, I imagine feeling the joy I’ll have when I surprise someone with a gift. Or when I’m searching for a new home, I practice having thoughts  that  feel good about a new living space until it’s such a natural feeling within me that it’s easiest to go there. Focusing our attention is just one part of the equation of manifestation – choosing what makes our heart sing, following our joy leads the way! We can be like the bird that feels the light and, even when it’s still dark, sings its way into the new day.

"Man transforms himself into the things he loves. When the time arrives for his sun to set, he has become that which, during the course of his life, he has, consciously or unconsciously, chosen to be."
Alexis Carrel

Get Fired Up:

What makes you feel good when you think about it? Practice this until it becomes natural within you.

“Feel” your next steps by choosing joy.
